When Transmen Dance
Between 2011 and 2012, Cole completed the project titled When Transmen Dance: FTM Embodied Subjectivity and Classical Ballet as his Master's thesis at CUNY, Brooklyn College. In it, he explores the history and tradition of gender in ballet and what that means for dancers with non-normative gender identities, specifically those who identify as transmen and were trained as ballerinas.
While early in its development process, Cole presented this project under the title, When Transmen Dance: Hermeneutics of Dance Masculinities, at the CORD Special Topics Conference, Meanings and Makings of Queer Dance held at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Below are clips from the interviews with case study participants. All participants are professional dancers who identify on the transmasculine spectrum.
